Preserving the History of Álamos and Sonora
MISSION STATEMENT:
The Alamos History Association exists
to inform residents, guests, and researchers of the History of a functioning municipio in Northwest Mexico. The means of accomplishing this are through accumulation, preservation, and presentation.

La Asociación de Historia de Álamos existe para informar a los residentes, a los turistas, y a los investigadores históricos sobre lo que ha ocurrido en este municipio en el noroeste de México. El medio de lograr esto es por la acumulación, la conservación, y la presentación de la información histórica.
The Álamos History Association was founded in 1994 by the foreign community of Álamos, Sonora, the northern-most colonial city in Mexico. A small group of residents that year began meeting weekly to explore the history of this colorful community, founded in 1683, which has produced great wealth for the country of Mexico. Bev Krucek accepted the leadership role in that first year, and she continued to guide the group and expand its vision until her death in March, 2014.
Among the most important contributions of the Association has been in recording interviews from long-time residents. Álamos today has representatives of families who have lived in the community for more than a century, and club members have interviewed these families to gain historical information and cultural insights into Álamos‘ past. Beginning with pen and paper documents, these interviews have progressed to audio and video recordings, stored in the archives.
Among other active projects of the Álamos History Association are building a library of books relating to the history of Álamos, Sonora, and Mexico, publishing guidebooks and textbooks for children, and collecting, scanning, and preserving historic pictures of Álamos and its people.
In addition, the Association is working with local residents to map out sections of tunnels which run under the city center, which were caved more than 200 years ago to transport silver and move soldiers from place to place. The planned restoration of the historic church, the "Parroquía de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción," offers an opportunity to explore underneath the main floor (tombs and tunnels) and add items to create a religious museum..
Ten years ago the History Association adopted the “Anza Trail project” with the long-term goal of providing on-site information on the Mexico portion of Juan Bautista de Anza’s 1775 journey which led to the founding of San Francisco. Thirty citizens of Álamos made the journey with Anza, which began in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Fundada en 1994 por la comunidad extranjero de Álamos, la Asociación de Historia se reúne cada semana para
explorar la rica historia de esta ciudad colonial. Álamos, fundada en 1683, ha producido gran riqueza por México a través de sus minas de plata y por los logros de sus ciudadanos. Beverly Krucek aceptó el liderazgo de la Asociacion hace 20 años y servió fielmente hasta su muerte en marzo, 2014.
Una contribución muy importante de la Asociación ha sido las entrevistas con la comunidad nativa y la comunidad extranjera de Álamos. Álamos tiene representantes de familias que han vivido aquí más de cien años, y miembros de la Asociación han preservado sus palabras en el vídeo y en el papel por los archivos en la Biblioteca de Investigación de la Asociación.
Entre otros proyectos activos de la Asociación de Historia de Álamos se encuentran la construcción de una biblioteca de libros relacionados con la historia de Álamos, Sonora y México, la publicación de guías y libros de texto para niños, y la recopilación, escaneo y preservación de fotografías históricas de Álamos y su gente.
Además, la Asociación está trabajando con los residentes locales para mapear secciones de túneles que discurren bajo el centro de la ciudad, excavados hace más de 200 años para transportar plata y trasladar soldados. La restauración planificada de la histórica "Parroquía de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción" ofrece la oportunidad de explorar el subsuelo (tumbas y túneles) y añadir elementos para crear un museo religioso.
Hace diez años, la Asociación adoptó el proyecto el Rastro de Anza para proporcionar información del viaje de Juan Bautista de Anza en 1775 que resultó en la fundación de San Francisco, California, EE.UU. Treinta ciudadonos de Álamos viajaron con Anza, un viaje que comenzó en Culiacán, Sinaloa.

The 'History' of the Álamos History Association
This 136-page guide to the history of Álamos can be purchased direct through the Álamos History Association for 200 pesos, and it is also available at Kathy’s Korner. Published by our Association, the book has 127 historical and present-day photographs, and provides details of the rich 300-year history of our community—which includes a walking tour of central Álamos. The entire book is written in both English and Spanish, and it is an excellent gift for friends and family.
